This guy has playfully danced all over DNS for much of his career and finding a problem like this gets to the heart of how the Internet works. This just might even top streaming video over DNS! The amazing thing about DNS is that's it's highly resistant to change, so it hasn't exactly been evolving rapidly. Anyhow, this talk had the normal level of Dan enthusiasm and was packed -- standing, sitting, in the aisles. Dan exhaustively demonstrated what can happen when you can own DNS at the highest levels. When you think about it, it's really insane. He also went into depth about the massive patch orchestration effort that went on behind the scenes. Kudos to everybody involved for making it all happen.

BlackHat Day 1 -- Bad Sushi and Phisher on Phisher Crime

Bad Sushi:Beating Phishers at Their Own Game
Nitesh Dhanjani and Billy K Rios

These guys easily infiltrated a bunch of phishing forums by pretending to be a young kid wanting to learn how to do it. They were very quickly "helped out" and handed tons of phishing kits, after claiming they couldn't afford the exorbitant prices for the kits. Some of the observations from the presentation were quite comical. The phishing scene (sub-culture?) is one of bravado and backstabbing. They even found lists of other phishers that will rip off other phishers. They called it "phisher on phisher crime." One phisher generously gave the two a bunch of kits, but had clearly attempted to obfuscate something in the primary php uploader code, so that each stolen identity would also have a copy sent to the author. Another hilarious example, was a guy that was giving "instructions" on how to hack yahoo. There were pages of completely fake instructions -- that only someone non-technical would write or believe -- but at the end, to get it to work, you had to enter a working credit card number! When they e-mailed the guy that it didn't work, he simply told them that they "did it wrong" and "do it again". They also talked a bit about the various pricing they saw for stolen credit cards and what some of the likely return rates were. Very fun, stuff.

BlackHat Day 1 -- Wake Up, Register, Eat, Get Punched in the Face

I was up early this morning and off to Ceasar's, where I quickly registered, grabbed a bagel, coffee, and took the lay of the land. There seems to be a lot more people this year and quite a few more vendors. I saw a few folks I know and managed to call one person by the wrong name. So, I hit the Intro and the Keynote.

Key Note Speech -- Complexity in Computer Security
Ian Angell, Professor Information Systems, London School of Economics

This was a really great knock-in-the-jaw speech (Okay, I was speaking metaphorically!). One of the main points he made was that our instincts to use statistics and risk analysis to simplify complex systems is doomed to fail by its nature, especially when that system has human pressures applied to it. When people ask me about info security risk, I often make a similar point by drawing a standard bell curve with lines for two standard deviations from the mean. For some instinctive reason, people seem to be very comfortable trying map to this distribution world view of risk. Then I draw an arrow pointing to around 2% with a snarky caption like, "Owned". The problem is that, things just don't follow simple models when dealing with emergent systems, because the rules of evaluation can change at any time. There really are no rules that can fully work. I'm going to have to think about it some more ... seriously.

More on Day 1 talks as I get them written up.

Welcome to Vegas

Alright! Well, I did not get hung up by airport security, as I usually do. I think I've got a clear path figured out, now: if you're on the list, use the frequent flyer programs! I sat next to a guy on the airplane that was wearing grey and also going to BlackHat -- oddly, once we established this fact, we hardly spoke to each other. Prepare to experience Homo Securitas. Upon arrival, I hit the ground running, got to my hotel, checked in, and was immediately off to Ceasar's Palace, where I hooked up with Cvoid and Lara for dinner. I met and hung out with a couple of his co-workers on the InfoSec team at Ebay and then tried to register for BlackHat, but was too late. I swear, some people are payed to be grumpy. I saw a kid in a stroller wearing a toilet-seat-looking neck-pillow, so that his mom could drive him around the hotel, while he slept. She said, very matter-of-factly, "He IS still alive and that's all that matters." The above picture is Cvoid and I crashing the Qualys party (though honestly our crashing didn't last very long). I ironically clinked glasses with a few folks there as we attempted to find Mike Murray (where's Waldo?), but never succeeded. We subsequently failed to crash the BlackHat presenter party, though we had a good shot at it. I got to greet Kingpin in the elevator on the way up to the penthouse. After more hanging out at Ceasar's, I headed back to my hotel and received a nice profanity laced tirade from my cab driver for taking too short a ride. "Why don't you take a #$%ing bus next time," he said. When I started to settle in my room for the night, I got a text and was back off to the yearly, pre-BlackHat, midnight at Denny's with the nCircle VERT team, which I finally was able to make. Now, I've got to be up early to register. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now.”

Well, I had stashed this away in my brain as a quote from Sir Edmund Hillary. I recently went to go search for it again and discovered multiple attributions to William Hutchinson Murray (a Scottish Mountaineer) and Goethe. After some very brief digging it turns out that my memory was, in fact, flaky, and people have clarified this all over the place. Here is the full quote on Murray's Wikipedia entry. I also found this nice investigation on the Goethe side: Is it by Goethe or not?

Anyhow, this is one of my favorite quotes for its obvious merits.

Elite bbox

I saw this telecom bbox the other day -- 1337! One of the funny thing we discussed about applying real metrics to our space was that people often think of certain familiar pieces of data, like ip address or mac address, as higher scale data-points, because they are superficially numerical, when they are only nominal in scale. Yes, that means they're just strings! You generally can't even imply the ordinal scale of an ip address, because it could very well be non-unique (at least in our type of dataset it is).

As these discussion tend to go, we then verged from stats to set theory as we attempted to clear up the usage of "ordinality" from "cardinality" as found in a recent book on security metrics. For those without the desire to follow the links, I will grossly simplify. Ordinality has a special purpose in describing infinite sets as "well ordered" (like the set of all natural number), though it typically can refer to a set of numbers or sets that are in order. Cardinality refers to the size or number of elements in a set.

Let's go back to Cantor, shall we? If you're still reading, checkout Cantor's Theorem and Cantor's Paradox. Here you can read about Aleph and it's use in talking about the cardinality of infinite sets.

Macbeth to His Lady.

Macbeth: There's comfort yet; they are assailable.
Then be thou jocund. She can do quite a lot with her magical bracers. I was roped into playing her arch-nemesis, whom I nicknamed "Lord Starbucks". My primary powers were that I could use a brassy acidic attack and could magically hop from corner to corner, appearing where you least expected me (like inside a bank or a retail shop).

Peet's Woman, in true comic book fashion, was using the full gusto of her sound-action punches to defeat me, ceaselessly. Her devastating hand-to-hand attacks were too much for me: "Latte!" "Mocha!!" "Ginger Cookie!!!" "Black Bottom Cupcake!!!!" After being defeated again and again, I was finally re-cast as Peet's Woman's sidekick: Peet's Lad. I have to admit, that wasn't quite as exciting a role.

Obi Kaufmann -- Optic Whale

Had a blast Thursday evening with my old friend, Obi Kaufmann. Check out his site. He's also got a link over to the latest edition of Swee(t)Art Magazine, if you want to find out more about the Oakland art scene. We hung out at his studio for a bit, where I took the photo above. He's working on art for 2 new shows in April. We ended up at Lucky 13 in Alameda -- lots of black-light pop art and free sausages (it was some anniversary celebration).

The Nose

A friend of mine said that I looked pissed-off in the other self-portrait I posted. Hob (sb1, 2. a. Robin Goodfellow or Puck; a hobgoblin, sprite, elf (see also hob-thrush) 2. b. Phr. to play hob: 'to play the devil', work mischief. ...) + Goblin]"

Apparently "Hob" itself is a form of Rob, Robin and Robert; thus, Robin Goodfellow, (a.k.a. Puck) is a hob-goblin. And "Hobby horse" (see section called 'origin of the term') and the shortened version "hobby" are also akin. The OED seems to hint that the horses were also derived from the name "Robin," but that might be what I like to call "bogo-etymology."

bogo-etymology: n. [from bogus (obsolete argot bogus counterfeit money) + Middle English ethimologie, from Anglo-French, from Latin etymologia, from Greek, from etymon + -logia -logy] 1. Attempts to create genuine historical origins for words by using faulty inference, neologisms, non-historical context, or wishful thinking. [Editors Note: Definition 2 of "neologism" does not apply to the creation of this word, by the current author.]

So, what do you get when you race a hobby horse against a bob-tail nag? Well, I don't know, but somebody bet on the grey.

Okay, okay ... back to the tangent at hand. We've come around to something interesting, at last! A pretty, matronly woman -- horn-rimmed glasses, a pink blouse. She strolled the crosswalk with a paperback, crooked in her one hand, eyes upon it. I smiled briefly, knowingly, as if to say, "Good book?" And she stopped, on auto-pilot, oblivious to my entre to a superfluous discussion of her literary tastes -- she had a book to read, after all!

I like people that love books. For that matter, I have a soft spot in my heart for people that love them enough, or at least the one they've got, to walk while reading, damn the on-coming traffic. The cosmic laws of cross-walks protect these enthralled individuals. Though, it's a good way to go, I suppose.

[Enter solumn attendants in black, with plaintively weeping aunt, purple eye shadow and mascara running in rivulets down her cheeks . The mother and father stand at opposite ends of the procession, he with a cane, pulling an oxygen tank, her brazenly blowing sobs into a monogrammed handkerchief from her second husband. Brother Edward at the casket-head looks resigned and says, "At least Edna died doing what she loved most," followed by a muttered soliloquy about the circled word 'eskimo' in her tattered book, which has been lovingly placed in her hands and folded across her chest.]

She turned to cross the next cross-walk, along with me, and I saw what she was reading, a tattered page-turner from the romance section. The book itself looked vintage eighties, from the used book-store or a garage sale for a quarter. The man and woman on the flung-back cover looking, as they always do, oil-painted icons of people you're supposed to dream you were: handsome and strong (no chest hair or shirt) or lovely and demure (lace, long hair, longing in the eyes).

There is a certain loneliness to this, like the girl I passed ten minutes later, sitting at the cafe window with her laptop -- playing windows solitaire (which is probably what she does at work, too). My how we pass time, waiting for someone to show up for us. Half in and half out of our head space.

I chuckled knowingly, because seeing a walking reader always jars the same funny memory of myself in my college years. I was walk-reading along some wide campus path. I'm sure I was reading something that would reveal my completely die-hard nerd-hood, though I can't recall what I was reading. Let's say it was Milton or Rilke. And as I meandered the path turned slightly and I walked headfirst into a large tree branch that protruded into the path. Startled and brought back from the urgent precipice of my own thoughts by the very real bark of a tree, I stumbled a bit, felt my head for damage and kept right on walk-reading. That was until some other irksome intrusion penetrated my fog -- laughter. Someone was laughing at me! I looked around and sitting some twenty yards away were some friends cross-legged in the grass, grinning at me. As if to say, "Good book?"

To which I simply, smiled and said, "Yes!" And I laughed with them.

Specialty furniture

Airborne is not a magic fizzy potion, after all.

Airborne settles lawsuit for $23.3 million

"The herbal supplement firm will settle class action lawsuit that alleges false advertising; money will be refunded to consumers, non-profit advocacy group says."
I have used Airborne and feel like it helps. I saw this book, "First Knight" in one of those discount bookstores that takes over the same type of empty building that the Halloween store likes to takes over. Much to my disbelief, this book was still around for their 80% off, close-down sale. The most haunting question it awakened in me was: which came first, the movie or the book? The book here has cover-art from the movie of "First Knight", so the book could be derivative of the movie. But then, given the movie, how would they ever have gotten anyone to write the book? Could it be that the movie was an adaptation? Therein lies a mystery. I don't have the stomach to research this conundrum -- the solution to which might cause a collapse in space time, causing the inevitable creation of the movie "The Last Legion" in an attempt to harness the historical vis of Arthurian legend frivolously over-layed onto the the bloody fall of Rome to the Goths -- since this post is more time wasted in contemplation of "First Knight" than could ever be warranted.

Ye olde towne jewelry shoppe: D&D Jewelry

This place had a Ring of Protection +3 for only 15,000 gold pieces! And I'm all for making complex things simple. Hanlon's Razor goes something like this: "Never attribute to malice that which can be explained by ignorance."

In my experience, we are all quick to judge the intent of others. Many of us are fully convinced we've got a special knack for reading people, knowing what they meant, etc. To those with this inclination, I recommend they stop trying to "mind read". What I call "mind reading" is where we take phenomenal communications or data (spoken or written words, actions, body language, silences, etc.) and assume we know the causal thought or intent behind them with complete clarity. To me it's plain and simple -- people are too complex for this. Have you ever noticed that you have a lot on your mind sometimes? Would you want somebody to judge you based on what might be written all over you face at the most inopportune time? I doubt it. What I'm saying is that, we are as complex in our thoughts as in our outward communications.

So, if you see malicious intent or social deviousness, remember that most of the time ignorance is at work. When we are attempting to read into peoples words or actions for forethought or intention, we often assume we know what people are thinking or what the causal trigger was for their expressions, when we often don't have the whole picture or we're flat out wrong.

For me, Hanlon's Razor ties in with several other simplifying things I like to live by. Taking people at face value, (even when they're lying). Giving people the benefit of the doubt (even when they don't deserve it). And, allowing for and forgiving ignorance, (because we may want to be forgiven our own ignorance on any given day).

Dilemma

I was talking to a friend tonight about the difficulty he felt in making a tough life decision -- a particularly challenging fork in the path, shall we say -- and Heraclitus came to mind. However, when it did, this simple, perfect quote wouldn't come to my lips. Instead, I sputtered something about "never stepping in the same river twice." It would have been nice to have my other camera with me to capture it. In this image a colossal crane, hidden off to the right, lifts a two-story tall aluminum rectangle. As it rises and twists, the morning sun strikes it into a dazzling sight. It was as if nature and man were conspiring for this momentary sculpture, using the building, the sun, and a giant crane. I had only to look back over my shoulder for the showing. In the background you can see the green shimmer of a partly-faced building, reflecting another building -- the back of the one where I work.

Forkbolt: Definition #7

First of all, I like the idea of text as an infinite labyrinth. The never-ending forks in the garden of my life sure seem to point to an intuitively infinite number of possible futures. Thus arises my war with causality and effortlessness of birthing infinite possibilities. The infinite set of forks not taken, somehow does not diminish the infinites set of forks taken. Unless there is a terminating condition. Clearly, the final fork taken makes the attainment of infinite paths along the forks ... pause, perhaps. Neither Borges' meta-text, nor the fictional Ts'ui Pen's text/labyrinth succeed at this chain of infinity. Their causal agency are both, brilliantly and mind-bendingly, in the past. The possible future is neither true nor false. Does the forked bolt hit the ground?
